twelve81 - About, Creative, Design - - 0 Comments

Today we are interviewing the women of Twelve 81 Creative, Kate and Heather … yes ourselves. Don’t worry it will be quick, painless and entertaining!

So, the boring stuff first:

Where were you born?
KATE
I was almost born in a car…. but luckily my dad made it to the hospital and I was born in Lincoln, Nebraska.

HEATHER Casper, Wyoming

Where did you go to college? Do you have a degree?
KATE
Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas. Home of the Tigers! I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree with an emphasis in Graphic Design.

HEATHER I earned an Associates of Fine Arts from Casper College and a Bachelors of Arts degree from the Art Institute Denver.

What’s your family like?
KATE
I am one of 4 sisters and we have a special bond. My oldest sister, Joslyn, is married and has 2 girls. Mia and Emma. They are the best little things and I love being an aunt. I am next in line and we are pregnant with our first baby boy! Lea and Marisa are both married with some babies in their future. So we are a growing troop! My Mom, Joslyn, Lea and myself all live in the Denver Metro area and Marisa is a short 3-hour drive away in Kansas where my Dad and Stepmom live. It is so nice to live close to each other. We are mostly loud, loving, creative and truly enjoy spending time together.

My husband Max and I have been together for 7 years now and married for almost 3. We have a terrier mixed dog named Lola who is truly the sweetest dog ever. We are excited for our newest member to arrive in March 2018! Max is an RN and we balance each other out well with his spontaneous goofy side and my practical yet creative side. We love movies, craft beer, traveling and game nights!

HEATHER I’m the youngest of 3 sisters – Courtney is the oldest and Ashley is the middle. I’m a big believer in how birth order affects your personality and perspective on life. That’s usually my ice-breaker question. Anyway, I grew up in an athletic and academic household. Grades and a starting position on varsity were a big deal. My sisters and I did similar things in high school – like classes and sports, I think our parents planed that so they could make it to all our events – not a lot of double booking! So, in college, we really separated in our interests and activities. My oldest sister, Courtney is a Forensic Scientist and a mother of one in Phoneix, AZ and my middle sister, Ashley has a master’s degree in education but has the hardest job of us as a full-time mom of 3 in Thornton, CO.

I LOVE being an aunt to my nieces and nephews on both my side and my husband’s side. I’m very close to my extended family – grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. I have a family reunion almost every year and/or a family wedding – it’s always chaotic and fun.

I have a small family of 2, well 3 if you count our dog, Beau. My husband, Jeff, and I met working at Blockbuster – (that was a store where you could rent movies and video games). We just celebrated our 10-year anniversary! Jeff is pretty an awesome guy, I really like him.

Now for some fun stuff:

You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why?
KATE I would be a shade similar to jade green. I love classic colors and green is probably my favorite. I feel this color would be timeless and when I design I like to keep that in mind.

HEATHER Oooo – good one. Um, I’d be a vibrant teal-like blue because it can be a cool and warm color depending on how it’s used. I think I’m versatile and have a good balance of a creative and analytical mind. Kate does too and that balance has made Twelve 81 successful and the best company to work for.

What do you think about when you’re alone in your car?
KATE I tend to look at the scenery here in Colorado and think “Wow what a beautiful place I live” …unless I am stuck in traffic then I think… “Wow, this is annoying!”

HEATHER I’m usually doing a mental checklist of things I need to get done. If it’s a long car ride, I like to call my mom, husband or friends to catch up.

What’s your favorite ’90s jam?
KATE
The 90’s has such a variety of music I am going to pick a few. Hold On by Wilson Phillips. Wonderwall by Oasis. What I got by Sublime. Killing me softly with his Song by Fugees. I also loved me some Jewel, Lisa Loeb, and Ani Difranco.

HEATHER I know I have one, but I have to look up ‘90s songs, hold on a sec. Ok – that’s hard because I was 9-18 years old during the ‘90s and that’s a huge jump in maturity. Ice Ice Baby – that’s a good one. No Scrubs, Genie in a Bottle, Wonderwall, Nothing Compares 2U, anything Janet Jackson. I can’t pick just one.

What was the last gift you gave someone?
KATE
I bought my husband a Broncos jersey for his birthday. He is a huge Broncos fan.

HEATHER I made a cheesecake for a friend’s birthday.

How would you rate your memory?
KATE I think it used to be better than it is now, but I would give it a 7 out of 10.  I had meningitis as a child which effects memory sometimes so I like to blame my memory issues on that when I can. HA!

HEATHER I think it’s annoyingly good. Like sometimes, I wish I could forget. I will say if I’m watching TV or working and my husband (or Kate) says something – I’ll answer, have a conversation and not remember any of it.

Who would win a fight between Spiderman and Batman
KATE
Batman. I have never liked Spiderman. He kind of annoys me as a character. So I choose Michael Keaton Batman!

HEATHER Batman – he actually doesn’t have a superpower. He’s the bravest because of that. And also his complicated past, so he’s had a lot of life lessons. Spiderman is really just a boy – also an orphan, but did grow up with family instead of a butler. So that makes Batman even tougher, grittier.

Pick something out of your pocket or purse and share why it’s important to you.
KATE
I keep a silver dollar in my purse my Dad gave to me. His dad used to carry silver dollars in his pockets and he gave me a few from his collection, so I decided to carry on the tradition.

HEATHER I keep a small tape measure in my purse. It’s come in quite handy. I’ve had to prove the size of an inch. I’ve measured a small child. I’ve measured furniture and knick-knacks. I also keep a Sharpie in my purse, because pens don’t write on all surfaces.

If you were to change your name, what name would you adopt going forward? Why?
KATE I don’t think I would. The pressure put on me to come up with an awesome name is just too much, so I don’t think I would change it. Besides, I like that my name is just Kate.

HEATHER Grant White is my fake name. It comes from a nickname from high school – Great White – no, I’m not going to tell you why. Jeff (my husband) misheard me one day and said who is “Grant”. Thus, Grant White was born. I also like the idea of the unisex name or like a masculine name for a woman. It’s amazing the prejudgment that names get especially with women.

What was your favorite subject at school?
KATE
I loved art of course! Second – was probably Math. In high school, I took 4 years of art and was also a teacher’s aide for my favorite math teacher Mrs. Shank.

HEATHER Honestly, this is so ironic, in high school I loved math. I liked it because there was an answer. And now, I make a living on something that has no answer. In college, I loved print-making. I totally geek out on seeing wood-cut prints that had several matrices, – lino, intaglio … all really awesome techniques in printmaking.

Who would play you in a film?
KATE
Anna Kendrick – She is goofy, and awkward at times and she can sing. I love to sing and am quite quirky. So she is the perfect person to play me in a film!

HEATHER Leslie Jones … no, I’m kidding, I do love Leslie and she and are both loud. But Amy Poehler would be perfect.

Are you a morning or a night person?
KATE
I am more of a night person. I get last minute projects and cleaning done late at night when I should be sleeping.

HEATHER I’m more inclined to be a night person.

What’s the best sandwich you’ve ever had?
KATE
Tommy’s Subs in Morrison, Colorado. I get the Turkey fully loaded! They have the best pepper mix and olive/vinegar mix!

HEATHER There’s this Thanksgiving turkey sandwich that is just amazing at Café Carolina Bakery. It’s turkey with cranberry chutney, swiss cheese on a rosemary herb bread. It’s Thanksgiving in your mouth.

Thank you for taking the time to answer questions today. Can’t wait for what comes next!
